Chapter Seven

“RIGHT NOW?” ALLEEN asked.

“The moment everyone’s ready,” Polunu said.

“Come eat breakfast,” Malie said to him.

“I’ve already had breakfast, Auntie,” he said before sharing his gaze between Silver and Alleen. “I’ll be outside near the hangar. Come as soon as you’re ready,” he finished before walking out the door.

Alleen scoffed. “Whatever.”

“Get ready to go,” Silver told Julia before following Polunu. Outside he found dew covered the grass, and from the east, the sun beamed across a partially clouded, orange-tinted sky. The air was cool and filled with the scent of eggs and sausage.

Silver threaded around a few conversing villagers and caught up with Polunu. The two walked together toward the hangar.

“So, what’s the big hurry?” Silver asked.

“The sooner I get you guys on the way, the better.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means what I said.”

“Why do I get the feeling you’re not being straight with me?”

Polunu stopped, and Silver stopped with him.

“I’m not being straight with you?” Polunu said. “Why should I care? I barely know you. But I do know you staying here could cause trouble for the village.”

“You mean with Shima and the Yakuza? Are you afraid of him?”

Polunu waved Silver’s comment away and continued toward the hangar.

Silver followed behind him. “Is that a yes?” he asked.

“I fear no man, but don’t want to cause unnecessary trouble here—for my people,” Polunu said as he approached a shed next to the hangar.

A man with an AK-47 stood guard in front.

“What about your cousin? Isn’t she your people?” Silver asked.

Polunu snickered. “I’m not worried about them hurting her,” he said before turning to the armed guard, nodding, and walking inside.

“What does that mean?” Silver asked Polunu. He then looked at the guard. “I’m with him,” he said while pointing at Polunu and following him inside the shed. “Why are you not worried about her? What did you mean?” Silver asked him again.

Polunu walked to a long table covered with rifles, handguns, and ammunition. He grabbed a rifle and a magazine. “I mean, I’ll be bringing a couple of my men with me to make sure you make it to the village safely.”

“You’re expecting trouble?”

“It’s possible.”

“Okay, give me one of those automatic rifles.”

Polunu laughed. “Have you ever fired a gun like this?”

“You weren’t asking when I had one aimed at you yesterday.”

“Pointing a gun at a man and shooting a man are two completely different things. You can hurt yourself or others if you’re not careful with these automatics.”

“I’ll manage,” Silver said, as he reached for one of the AK-47s on the table.

“No-no,” Polunu said, while blocking Silver’s hand. He then picked up a thinner, slightly longer rifle and handed it to Silver. It was an old school lever action rifle with a shoulder strap.

“What’s this?” Silver said, holding the gun in his hands.

“It’s training wheels.”

“Look, this isn’t the wild west, we’re not robbing a stagecoach.”

“Well, that’s all we have available. The rest of the guns are for the guards to protect the village. The magazine for it is there,” Polunu said, pointing at the table.
